Pure panic took over a Kano community after a tanker filled with fuel exploded sending residents cowering with fear.
The tanker which was conveying fuel exploded at Dakatsalle village in Bebeji Local Government area of Kano state, on Sunday night.
Following the tragic incident, one persn was killed, two others were injured and at least, 10 vehicles destroyed.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the DG, Media and Communications, Government House, Kano, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, eye witnesses say that the fire also destroyed several shops, causing loss of material goods in the area.
According to the witness, the incident, which started around 7.30 pm, happened shortly after the driver of the vehicle parked at the village to break his Ramadan fast.
There was pandemonium in the village as the residents, including men, women and children hurried out of their homes and scampered for safety in adjoining farms.
Reacting to the incident, the state Acting Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, described the incident as regrettable.
He enjoined drivers of conveying petroleum products to be cautious at all times so as to avoid loss of lives and destruction of property.
The acting governor commended the state Fire Service for promptly containing the situation, noting that it would have resulted into a grave calamity if not for their dexterity.
