Top 5 Implications of University's Non-teaching Staff Warning Strike

University of Ibadan, school gate

This is an interesting piece on the effect of strike actions by members of the non-academic staff association in higher institutions.
It’s no longer news that all non-academic staff of Nigeria universities will be embarking on an industrial action tomorrow to warn and remind the government of their promises in their 2009 agreement with the union.

Most university union’s has shown positive reactions to the strike, with the likes of OAU, UI and others actively involved. Many students have since been thrown into the dark on possible result(s) of the strike.

We take a brief look at five possible implications of the strike on the university students.

1. Practical Classes May not Hold
As all know, the NAAT part of the non-teaching staffs are the ones in control of the practical activities in the University laboratories, since they will not be on ground to conduct the practical, it directly means the classes won’t hold.

2. Water and Electricity Supply Maybe Epileptic
To face the truth, the NASU part of the union are in control of the water and Electricity control areas. Therefore, if they are not on-ground to see to the pumping of water and serving of electricity, who will? However the OAU branch has promised to be lenient on the students.

3. Dirty Academic Environment
Refuse and sewage maybe packed, but it will take and exogenous influence for it to be moved to the decomposition zone where it will be disintegrated. If the NASU members are not going to this, our university environments will be littered and dirty for a whole week, it’s unethical.

4. Constrained Academic Activities
If number should eventually happen, the academic calendar will be cheated, which means activities that ought to take two weeks normally may be cut to one week’s. You know what constraint could do to some who is not a “multitasker”.

5. Possible Shutdown of the Libraries
You need to get a new venue if you’re a library crawler. All Libraries in Nigeria’s public university May not function for the next week, as the NASU members Augment the activities in the library.

With all this listed above, it may be a week of fasting and perseverance for Nigerian Students.
